Banteay Srei Temple - Angkor Archaeological Park.

The complex is around 30 kms from Siem Reap but it's well worth the visit as the drive takes you through some really nice countryside. The entrance fee is included in the main ticket price so don't forget your ticket!. Founded by Hindu priests in the late 10th century, Banteay Srei Temple is quite small in comparison to some of it's more famous Angkor campanions and is also known as the Citadel of Women and/or the Citadel of Beauty.

A Temple Gate at Banteay Srei, Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia. The Temple, two libararies and other buildings within the site are surrounded by a small moat and the temple is dedicated to Shiva. Generally constructed from red sandstone the temple has been beautifully carved with Indian Gods and Goddesses - the latter are dressed in Indian style skirts with lavish jewellery. Apart from the small size of the buildings in comarison to other Angkor temples, Banteay Srei is unusual in that it is the only structure in the area which was not originally constructed by one of the Khmer Kings - although this changed sometime during the 11th century when the temple was refurbished and re-dedicated to Siva.

In it's own way Banteay Srei is just as interesting to visit - perhaps more so - than the other Angkor temples and palaces. The buildings and carvings are really beautiful and since Banteay Srei Temple is some way from the main Angkor sites then less people go out that far - especially if on one of the organised trips - so it is usually quite peacefull to look at and wander around.
