Floating house on Tonle Sap Lake - Cambodia.

Chong Kneas Boat Trip.

Chong Kneas is a small Cambodian Village near to Siem Reap from where boats trips can be taken onto Tonle Sap Lake

The drive there is around 9 miles/15 kilomtres from Siem Reap. The route pretty much follows the Siem Reap River passing through paddy fields and countryside. The first stilt houses you come across are situated just below Phnom Krom Hill - interesting in itself as it's about the only sizeable hill in the area. A little further along the road there is a huge parking area and this is where the ticket office and where the boats are moored. The floating villages and lake are still some distance from here and the road does continue towards them. However apparently tourists are not permitted to go any further at least by tuk-tuk - whether anyone would try and stop you simply walking the next few kilomtres is unknown. Therefore to see the lake you have to join a boat trip - which can cost at least USD15 per adult. This is somewhat annoying because although there is plenty of opportunity to see the stilt houses alongside Siem Reap River there is no access apart from paying for a fairly expensive boat-trip to see the floating villages and the lake.

For the above-mentioned boat-trip it is quite evident that getting out even a little way on to the lake is totally organised/controlled by one set of local Cambodians. There is certainly no opportunity to negotiate with individual boat-men for your ride - it is just not allowed. Various travel books do mention that taking these trips onto Tonle Sap Lake is quite a con because of the high price and for what you actually get to see and that does seem to be the case.
